Web Copywriting Tips - Specificity

by Andre Thomas on July 19, 2008

This is a very shirt and simple web copywriting tip for you. I’ve talked a lot about simplicity and focus in other posts.

Today’s tip is also along that line.

Imagine me talking about alternative cure for cancer right here in this blog. What would you think

Who the F$#* am I to be talking about cancer cure?! The rest of this blog is about web copywriting and here is a post about alternative health care.

Lesson: Keep to one subject and one subject only.

If you post about everything under the sky, your blog will soon feel soggy.. with no real "hook". Keeping to one subject makes your posts way more credible and it positions you right where you want: to be an expert. Soon people will flock to you like honey to bees, without expensive ads.

But wait a minute…

Most writers write on everything under the sun.

Some writers concentrate on a specific topic.

Only a tiny percentage of them drill deep into very specific topic. Here’s an example.

If you make a post about making money, that’s soggy. That’s crappy. Search google for "make money" and you’ll see a lot of this kind of crap.

Instead of make money use "make money online".

How about "make money online by building your own website"

How about "make money online by building your own website with killer sales copy"

How about "make money online by building your own website with killer sales copy and increase price by 20%"

And how about "make money online by building your own website with killer sales copy and increase price by 20% using live videos"

Now you’re talking.

Once you drill down deep enough into the caves of specificity, your posts and articles will start to glow. It will start to exude the "x" factor people are looking for.

Once you go deep enough, your posts and articles will start to have meat. People like the specifics. They look for the "how" and not the "why" or the "what". So next time you  write anything, make it so it’s actionable. Something peple can walk away with and use .
