I talked about duplicate content in my last post. I want to talk about it more in this post because it’s one of those that is silently killing you.

It’s like a ninja - you don’t even know you’re getting hit.

For those of you using wordpress as your blogging platform, this cannot be truer.

If you use wordpress and you have more than one category, you’ll have an option to save your blog post under more than 1 category.

Do not publish any blog post under more than 1 category! Doing so will guarantee duplicate content because if you do that, the search engines can access your post in two places - from under category A and category B.

Sure you know it’s the same post just different category, but the search engines spiders don’t! It’ll think it’s duplicate content and penalize your site. This is so bad, some people even call it a “bug” in wordpress,

I wouldn’t go that far… in terms of web usability, publishing a post under 2 or more categories is great - it can help users to find what they’re looking for.

But SEO wise, it’s definitely a no-no.

Think that’s bad? Wait for this… the problem doesn’t stop there.

Notice that you can click on the title of a post in your homepage and be brought to a page where there is only that particular post? Well, guess what?

That’s also a duplicate content for the search engines!

Now, before you go insane for this… relax. I’ve got the perfect solution for you. The duplicate content cure plugin will completely eliminate these problems by telling the search engines not to index those other pages.

Problem solved.
