How To Be Inspired At Will

I have a confession. Throughout my copywriting career.. heck, in my whole life, I’ve never had one single original idea. Everything I write, everything I teach and every advice I’ve ever given to my friends and fellow copywriters, are all… stolen!

They are all re-hashed stuff that you can get on the internet for free… That’s right. You heard me. I charged as much as $297 in other niche markets for information people can get free!

Before you exclaim “You bastard!”, let me explain.

The Power of Taking Baby Steps

Imagine this for a second. Armed with the mastery of the world’s psychological knowledge, you walk up to a stranger and with all the powerful research under your belt, you attempt to convince him to spend his life savings on a product you’ve created that would change his life for the better.

What do you think would happen? Is it likely that you’ll make a sale?

No. Absolutely not.

Should You Use Pop-ups in Your Blog? - The Psychology

by Andre Thomas on November 15, 2008

This is a highly debatable topic. Some people swear how effective pop-ups work, while some others hate them from the bottom of their hearts. Daily Blog Tips have an interesting post on this issue, where their poll showed that 36% of the people would stop visiting a website if they start using pop-up.

But before I go into how I feel about pop-ups and should you actually use them, I just have to say that, as a copywriter, I think that the poll’s result is probably not even kinda close to being the truth.

Persuade by Implying Rather Than Stating Facts

There are basically 2 major parts of our consciousness. There’s the conscious part, the part of thinking where you are aware of and then there’s the subconscious, the part where you are not aware of.

Most of us are not even aware the extend of the effect the subconscious mind have on us. For example, if you ask your friends is their behaviour affected by what other people do, I dare bet most of them would say no.

The “First Kiss” And The “Last Supper” Effect

by Andre Thomas on November 9, 2008

This next technique in my Psychological Triggers series is a simple one. I like to call it the “first kiss” effect or the “last supper” effect, depending on the situation. I will explain this later in the post.

All I can say is we all have experienced both effects. The effects of these phenomenon are so powerful that if I perform an experiment on you, I can prove my point right now.

Now let me ask you…

Do you remember your first kiss? How about your sixth?

How To use “Framing” To Increase Conversions

by Andre Thomas on November 8, 2008

Picture this: You’re walking down the street and you saw a beggar, squatting at the roadside, selling a painting… for say, $200. Would you buy it? Now, what if that same painting is moved to a posh art gallery, hung at a very prominent position?

Would you not RUSH to get it for that bargain price? That’s framing in action.

As Mark Joyner once puts it, the “frame” is the information around the information, just as the physical frame is around the painting. A good news in the wrong frame can be bad news and vice versa.

The psychological triggers in this post is one of the oldest persuasion techniques people have ever used.

The “foot in the door” technique is popular among door-to-door salesmen. If you’ve bought anything from them (who hasn’t?), you probably already witnessed the power of this trigger.

The idea behind “foot in the door” technique is basically to get someone to agree to something small, so that they’ll agree to something bigger later on. For example, door-to-door salesman would ask the owner of the house if he could come in to demonstrate just how powerful the product he’s to trying sell.

Ever heard of the saying, “No man is an island”? As it turns out, we can’t and don’t want to be an island because, you see, most of us possess something called “The Herd Mentality“.

As humans, you and I tend to agree with the opinion of the majority. We flock together to form a tribe, a society, a country. And we all strive to to be accepted into a group.

Just as I’m sure you’ve been peer pressured to doing something you regret later on.

Blogrush Is Dead…

by Andre Thomas on October 31, 2008

Having been absent from the online world for the 48 hours or so, I came back to find a surprising news: John Reese had finally pulled the plug on Blogrush.

I’ve used Blogrush since its inception, and though I never received much traffic from it (as do most other bloggers), I’ve always believed with a brilliant mind like John Reese behind it, it would someday be refined and fixed. Well… I was wrong.
