Google Insights For Keyword Research

by Andre Thomas on September 4, 2008

Now, those of you who do any kind of online copywriting should already know the importance of keyword research. If you don’t, you better start reading up on the subject because you’ll go nowhere without.

Let’s just say I’ve been there and done that.

Basic Keyword Research Tips

So anyway, if you look around the internet, you’ll quickly notice that a lot of people talk about keyword research. It’s nothing new. The typical thing you do when you’re doing your keyword research is to

1. Use Google’s Keyword Tool .

2. Complement the results you got from Google with Wordtracker . Wordtracker offers a free trial so a lot of people chose that.

3. Then you do competitive research by searching for your desired keyword and check out what your competitor are targeting by looking at their source code.

Plus a bunch of other stuff but here I’ll assume you are already aware of them. Those 3 are the core ones and if you did them right, you’ll be just fine.

Today, I’m going to talk about a relatively new, very powerful service. In fact, it’s so new it’s now still in Beta. I just used it but haven’t quite seen any results yet  but I can immediately see how it can change the fate of your website.

Google Insights for Search

That new tool is called “Google Insights for Search “. What it does is it allows you to access google’s data on a particular keyword.

It displays data such as

1. Interest over time. This is very useful since it tells you if there’s an increasing number of people searching for the keyword… or it’s getting less searched for.

2. Regional interest, which shows you where are those people who are searching for the specific keyword. This is interesting to know because sometimes you would never have guessed your major visitors come from a place contrary to what you expected.

For example, one of the keywords I get a few visitors from is “copywriting tips”. I never knew that there are more Indians looking for “copywriting tips” than US. In fact, US comes third, just behind UK.

3. Then there’s the usual related search terms.

So how can you make use of these data? Well, make sure you subscribe to my newsletter because I’m going to dive deep into it once I start seeing results.

In the mean time, why not take a look around for more copywriting tips?
