About Me
Having been a broke freshman out of college with an accounting degree back in the early days, Andre Thomas learned marketing the hard way. He would spend his whole weekends and all of his free time cocooning himself in a local library. There he would bury his face into any marketing books he could get his hands on.
But he realized all the book in the world could not get him the education of practical work. So he went out and offered local businesses his service - and get paid purely on commission. 2 years he did this and he failed to make any money on half of the project he worked on.
Armed with a little experience and his father’s guidance, he began to receive referrals from satisfied customers but still - working on commissions. The pay is good but the hours he had to put in is long.
That’s when he turned to the internet for an alternative. The rest is history.
He now works out of a home office and take 2 months long break every year.
Warning: In-depth story from here on
How It All Started
As a young kid Andre has always wondered why his dad’s schedule was unlike what his school taught him about working life and what his friends told him what their dads’ schedule was like. Going to work at 9am and coming back home at 5pm is a good day for them.
But his dad never left home. He had a small office right at home and he would sit there for 4 short hours… with breaks! The rest of the day? He would occasionally pick up calls from prospective clients but other than that, he spent his days doing things he like… like golfing and spending time with his family.
And as Andre grew up, he learned that entrepreneurship allowed dad to live the kind of life he wanted and from then on, he always knew that entrepreneurship is his calling in life.
But he never pursued that dream, at least not until he realized the insane hours he had to put in for an accounting firm and being yelled at all the time is not worth his social life, time with his family and his health. He finally had enough when his employer pushed him over the edge by making him work on Christmas, 1993.
How He Discovered Copywriting
Having no job and broke, he turned to his father for advice on entrepruneurship. He took him under his wings and gave him a pile of books. And in that pile, was “Scientific Advertising” by Claude Hopkins, the book that will forever change his life.
2 months he studied under his father before he asked him to go out and get some “real-world” experience. So he went out to get a job in copywriting. But no one would hire him but of his inexperience and lack of credentials.
He soon realized that he had to offer his serviceĀ on a commission basis. Seeing that they have nothing to lose, several local business owners agreed to allow him to write copies for them. The pay was good (when the copies succeed that is) - but he was not willing to put in that much time into work, preferring instead to “live life”.
So he turned his attention into the internet for an alternative. The rest is history.

What a story, my friend! You are blessed with a very supportive father whom you could “idolize” and show you the light at the end of the tunnel.
By the way, where did you grow up, Andre?

Thank God for my Dad! I was born in Surabaya but lived in Singapore since I was 7 years old… I was shipped there alone (but I did get to go back every 6 months or so)!

I was there in 1987 before I moved to Kuala Lumpur in 2000 but somehow we never crossed path. Anyway, I didn’t mix with the Indonesian community in S’pore and for that reason alone, somewhat I lost my mother tongue. I don’t speak and write fluent BI anymore.
Thanks for sharing too. We’ll talk soon.

That’s the same case for me! I frequently stutter when I speak BI, also because I don’t mix with the Indonesian community (there wasn’t a lot of them in my primary school).
